We are thrilled to annonce GIDA made it to the finals of Archstorming World Expos Open Competition! Faithful to its origins, GIDA chose Japan to express its creativity.
We wanted this concept to embody the identity of what is Japan today, a constant dialog between past history and innovative future. This proposal is an expression of Japan’s ambivalence between time and space, modernity and traditions, urban density and nature hideout.
In contrast with the hectic World Expo, the Japan Pavilion is a peaceful and relaxing sanctuary. We have recreated the feeling of stepping into one of Tokyo’s urban temples. Once you are in, it is as if time was suspended, as if you were reaching a different timeline dimension. The architecture has been conceived in continuity with Japanese secular codes but with XXI century cutting-edge building technology. Similarly, traditional materials such as cedar wood, slate stone, ceramic roofing are used in contemporary fashion.
At the heart of the “neo-Zen” garden stands the main gallery, the highlight of the Pavilion. It showcases the best of Made in Japan innovation on the ground floor. The 2nd floor is dedicated to traditional know-how. And the third floor becomes a belvedere with breath-taking views of the garden and surroundings.
Two secondary buildings complete the setting: a teahouse and a souvenir shop.
